Where we work

Builders in Worthing

We cover Worthing and the surrounding towns along the coast. It is the western end of our patch and comfortably within reach from Brighton and Hove.

Worthing's housing is noticeably different from Brighton's. There is far more interwar and post-war stock, a lot of bungalows, and bigger plots inland, which opens up work that simply is not possible on a Brighton terrace.

Local knowledge

Bungalows, semis and seafront villas

Worthing has Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas along the seafront and in the older central streets, but move inland and the character changes quickly to interwar and post-war semis, detached houses and a notably high proportion of bungalows. Bungalows are the big opportunity here: a bungalow loft is often the cheapest way to add two bedrooms to a property, and the roof structure and plot usually make it viable where a terrace would not. Larger plots also mean side and rear extensions have genuine room, and off-street parking and garages are common, which makes garage conversions straightforward. On the seafront, the same coastal exposure applies as further east.

Planning & permissions

Planning in Worthing

Worthing comes under Worthing Borough Council, a different planning authority from Brighton and Hove, with its own local plan and its own approach. That is worth knowing, because advice from someone who only works in Brighton will not necessarily carry across. There are conservation areas in the older central and seafront parts of town, but a large share of the interwar and post-war suburban stock sits outside them, and considerably more work falls under permitted development as a result than would in central Brighton.

Common questions

Building in Worthing: your questions answered

Can you convert a bungalow loft in Worthing?

Very often, yes, and it is one of the best value jobs available in Worthing given how many bungalows there are. It can add two bedrooms and a bathroom to a property without losing any garden. The deciding factors are the roof structure and the head height, which we measure at the site visit.

Do you actually cover Worthing from Brighton?

Yes. Worthing is the western end of our patch and comfortably within range, along with Shoreham-by-Sea and Lancing on the way. We will be straight with you if a job is too far out to service properly.

Is planning different in Worthing to Brighton?

Yes. Worthing Borough Council is a separate planning authority from Brighton and Hove City Council, with its own local plan. In practice more of Worthing's suburban housing sits outside conservation areas, so more work falls under permitted development than in central Brighton.

What affects an extension on a larger Worthing plot?

With more room to build, the limits tend to come from how much of the garden can be covered, boundary distances and overlooking, rather than from the physical squeeze you get on a terrace. Ground conditions and access are still worth checking properly before anyone quotes.
