Extensions in Brighton & Hove
An extension is the most reliable way to get the space you actually need without moving. We build single storey rear extensions, side returns, wrap-arounds and double storey extensions across Brighton, Hove and the surrounding Sussex towns.
We handle the whole job. Groundworks, foundations, structural steels, the build, the roof and the finish inside. One team from first dig to final coat means nothing falls down the gap between trades, which is where most extension projects go wrong.

What’s involved
What the job actually includes
Groundworks and foundations
Site clearance, excavation and foundations sized to the ground conditions and the structural design.
Structural openings
Steels installed to the engineer's specification where we are opening up the back of the house.
Shell and roof
Brickwork or blockwork to match the existing, then a flat or pitched roof detailed to keep water out properly.
Glazing and openings
Bifolds, sliders, roof lanterns and windows fitted square and sealed.
First and second fix
Plumbing and electrics run in, then plastering, joinery and decoration to finish.
Making good
Blending the new work into the existing house so it does not read as a bolt-on, inside and out.
Local knowledge
Extending a Brighton terrace
Much of Brighton and Hove is Victorian terrace, which means rear extensions are usually side returns or full-width infills into the original lean-to footprint, and access is through the house or a narrow alley rather than a driveway. That shapes everything from how materials reach the back to how the party wall is handled. We plan access and neighbour notification early, because on a terraced street that is the part that causes delays, not the building work.
Common questions
Extensions: your questions answered
Do I need planning permission for an extension in Brighton?
Many single storey rear extensions fall under permitted development, but Brighton and Hove has a lot of conservation areas and Article 4 directions where permitted development rights are removed, so it genuinely depends on your address. We will tell you which camp your property is in at the free site visit, before you spend anything.
How long does an extension take?
A straightforward single storey rear extension is typically a few months on site. Double storey work and anything involving significant structural alteration takes longer. We give you a realistic programme with the quote rather than an optimistic one, and tell you where the risk of slippage sits.
What affects the cost of an extension?
Size, ground conditions, how much structural steel is needed, the glazing you choose and the level of finish. Groundworks are the biggest unknown until we have looked at the site, which is why we come out and look rather than quoting off a floor plan.
Will you deal with building control?
Yes. We build to current building regulations and work with building control inspections throughout the job as standard.
